Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital ahead of Sunday afternoon's Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool after 'feeling unwell' at Old Trafford before kick-off.

The 84-year-old, who is a regular at home matches, had travelled to the stadium to watch the great rivalry between United and Liverpool.

Ferguson was pictured alongside a number of guests in the build-up to the game at Old Trafford, but more than an hour before kick-off, he was reportedly taken to the hospital after feeling unwell.

Ferguson was first attended to by medics in the Stretford End tunnel following his complaints and was soon taken to an ambulance, where medical checks were performed, according to The Sun.

The Scot was reportedly sat up in the ambulance, with a source telling the publication that he was “okay.”

A report from the Daily Mail claims Ferguson was taken into medical care 'purely as a precaution' and officials at the club are 'optimistic' that he will soon be recuperating at home.

There is nothing to suggest this incident is related to the brain haemorrhage he suffered in 2018, according to the publication.

The former Manchester United manager, who won 38 trophies during a legendary 26-year spell in charge of the club, underwent life-saving surgery after suffering the haemorrhage in May 2018.

Neurosurgeon Joshi George, who helped treat Ferguson after he was transported to Salford Royal Hospital with bleeding on the brain, said there was "an 80 per cent chance" he would not survive.

Ferguson has previously said he was "terrified" he would never be able to speak again after suffering the brain haemorrhage.

"I lost my voice, just could not get a word out, and that was terrifying - absolutely terrifying," he said. "And everything was going through my mind: Is my memory going to come back? Am I ever going to speak again?"

He would later work through exercises with a speech therapist, in which he had to recall every member of his old teams. His voice came back after 10 days.

Four months after the surgery, Ferguson made an emotional return to Old Trafford to watch United's clash against Wolves.
