Getafe have secret Mason Greenwood contract clause which could cost Man Utd millions

New details have emerged.

Getafe have a clause in Mason Greenwood's loan deal which could end up costing Manchester United millions of pounds.

Greenwood, 22, joined the Spanish club on a season-long loan in the final hours of the summer transfer window after United decided he would continue his career away from Old Trafford following an internal investigation into his behaviour.

Greenwood was initially suspended by United in January 2022 after being arrested and later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February after key witnesses withdrew their involvement in the case and new material came to light during the police investigation.

In a club statement released in August, United announced that their own investigation into Greenwood had found that he "did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged" but also confirmed he would leave Old Trafford.

He subsequently joined Getafe on loan and has since scored four goals and provided three assists in 13 games for the La Liga side.

Greenwood is under contract with United until 2025 with an option to extend for a year.

However, The Athletic claim that the club's intention is for the player to "complete his rehabilitation" on loan in Spain this season, before securing a permanent move away.

Getafe president Angel Corres has already confirmed the Spanish side are "considering buying" Greenwood after being impressed by his performances in Spain.

The Athletic claimed that Getafe inserted a clause into their loan agreement with United that could help them sign the player - or make a profit on him should he move elsewhere.

"They will only have to pay 80 per cent of any agreed price should they buy him outright. If United sell him to another club, Getafe will earn 20 per cent of the transfer fee," read the report.

"The Spanish club — who do not expect Greenwood to return to United — did not pay a loan fee for the player's services and the 20 per cent stake was viewed as a way to secure value regardless of his next move."

Getafe could face competition for Greenwood's signature, with several others European clubs reportedly interested in the former England international.

Real Sociedad were recently named as 'favourites' to sign the forward, while Valencia and Lazio have also been linked.
