Mason Greenwood could return to Man Utd this season due to secret Getafe contract clause

Mason Greenwood could return to Man Utd this season due to secret Getafe contract clause

He could return to Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood could return to Manchester United this season due to a specific clause Getafe included in the winger's contract.

Greenwood joined the La Liga side on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day, after after the club announced last month that they had mutually agreed for the 21-year-old to leave.

A statement from United confirming his move read: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

However, Greenwood's loan move could be cut short in January, according to The Athletic, who claim that the Spanish club can trigger a break clause.

The break clause would allow Getafe to send Greenwood back to Old Trafford should they be unhappy with his development.

It has since emerged that Greenwood was offered to all manner of European clubs, along with Premier League side Brentford, who declined the opportunity.

Getafe boss Jose Bordalas has defended the club's decision to sign the player, but admitted it was a 'delicate situation'.

"It is a very delicate situation to trivialise that issue," Bordalas said.

"Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-convictory sentence.

"He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm."

The 59-year-old added: "I have already commented what I had to comment. I can only speak on a football level. We all know the potential he has. He is a very young boy, he is still 21 years old and we can help him adapt to a situation.

"It’s a different league but because of the potential he has, I’m sure that if he physically reaches a good level, I’m convinced of him because of how young he is and because we’ve been informed that he obviously wants to recover his professional status and Getafe can help him in that."
