A Spanish domestic abuse charity has told Getafe to overturn their decision to bring in Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.

Earlier in the month, it was confirmed that both United and Greenwood mutually agreed that the best solution was for the forward to continue his career elsewhere.

On deadline day, the 21-year-old completed a loan move to Spanish La Liga side Getafe.

In a statement, United said: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

Since signing Greenwood, Getafe have received heavy criticism, according to the Daily Mirror, Spanish domestic abuse charity, the Ana Bella Foundation have asked the club to overturn their decision.

Ana Bella Estevez told the publication: “The club is setting a terrible example. Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision.

“If you’re a public facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women - you must take moral responsibility.”

SPORTbible has contacted Getafe CF for comment.

Greenwood has not played competitively in more than 18 months after he was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling behaviour.

Those charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February and United had been conducting their own internal investigation into the matter.

Announcing the decision on Greenwood’s future, United said in a statement: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.

“It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
