Liverpool have reportedly decided to waive the final year of Mohamed Salah’s contract, allowing him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
On Tuesday (24 March), the news Liverpool supporters had been dreading was confirmed as Salah released an emotional farewell video announcing he will be leaving the club on social media.
Salah leaves Liverpool a club legend and the third-highest scorer on the club’s all-time goalscorer list, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
The Egypt international will no doubt be hoping to add this season’s FA Cup and Champions League to his already lengthy list of accolades since arriving from AS Roma in 2017.

In total, the forward has helped Liverpool win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot’s guidance, with the player scoring 255 times in his Reds career.

The 33-year-old played a starring role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League triumph, producing 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 matches, which saw him voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the third time.
But this term, Salah’s form has dropped off, with the former Chelsea player scoring just ten times while registering nine assists in 34 appearances. The Egyptian also fell out with Slot in the winter of 2025 but has since returned to the squad.
It is unclear where Salah will be playing his football next season, with his agent Ramy Abbas Issa posting: “We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows. Beware of the click-whoring attention seekers,” on X shortly after the player’s exit was confirmed.
It has since emerged, via the Liverpool Echo, that the Premier League side will allow the player to leave for free in June 2026 despite him being under contract until 2027, having signed a two-year extension just last summer.
This effectively means Liverpool will forfeit a potential transfer fee, which they otherwise would have received, due to the mutual agreement between the player and the football club.
Of course, Liverpool previously turned down a £150m bid from Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023.
And despite Salah’s contributions coming at a huge financial cost, his performances on the pitch have been priceless and will live long in the memory of Liverpool supporters for decades to come.
Mo Salah’s farewell statement in full
“Hello everyone, unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club – it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t put into words what it means to anyone who isn’t part of this club.
We celebrated victories, we won the most important trophies, and we fought together through the hardest times in our lives. I want to thank everyone who has been part of this club throughout my time here, especially my team-mates, past and present.
And to the fans: I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me during the best times of my career, and the way you stood by me in the toughest moments, means everything.
It is something I will never forget and something I will carry with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you.
This club will always be home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all you, I will never walk alone.”
