'Let us give you...' - Mo Salah left stunned after receiving rare offer on first day at Trabzonspor

Former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was left visibly shocked after receiving a bizarre gift from a district mayor in Trabzon.

The 34-year-old joined Super Lig side Trabzonspor earlier this month, just weeks after departing Liverpool on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract.

Salah's decision to join a team that finished third in Turkey’s top division last season has surprised many, but it already looks like a worthwhile deal after Hüseyin Avni Coşkun Çebi, the district mayor, offered him a piece of land.

He arrived to meet Çebi in the Arakli district of Trabzon following his signing ceremony, for what was supposed to be an advertising shoot.

However, Salah was left baffled when the mayor abruptly turned to climate change after a conversation about the Egyptians home country.

“Global warming is threatening the world," he said. “In the future, it will become difficult to live in Egypt during the summer. Our district will be very livable in those years. It will be among the places least affected by global warming."

Çebi added: “Therefore, let us give you a beautiful piece of land here. It can be a wonderful place for your children and grandchildren, with no water problems and unaffected by global warming.”

Salah was pictured looking shocked as he scratched his face. He responded by saying “Thank you" while shaking Çebi’s hand.

Why is that area of land going to be less affected by climate change?

Trabzon, the city in which Trabzonspor are based, is located on the Black Sea coast of Northeastern Turkey and with a population of 824,000, it serves as the capital of the province of Trabzon.

Its biggest benefit to fighting off climate change is the coastal location that features dense and unplanned development, combined with a cool and forested mountainous interior.

That’s because the high ground can directly combat rising sea levels while its densely populated coastline is unlikely to be majorly affected, while the forested mountainous area allows it to maintain a consistent temperature.

The average temperature of the region sits around 24°C, while temperatures so far this year have only risen to 25.6°C on average, which helps maintain its biomes and agricultural capacity.

Compare that to Salah’s home country, where average temperatures have risen by six degrees to 38.5°C, and perhaps Çebi was onto something with his gift for their new signing.

Despite coming off the back of a poor season by his usual high standards, Salah has signed a contract worth a reported £14.5million a year.

He arrives in an attempt to break the dominance of Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in Turkey’s top two.
