Luis Diaz hit with huge blow days into Bayern Munich career as 'close friend' agrees transfer away

The Colombian winger has penned a four-year deal at the Bundesliga champions following his Liverpool exit.

Luis Diaz may not be best pleased to see a ‘close friend’ and new Bayern Munich teammate move on from the club just days after the winger completed his transfer from Liverpool.

Diaz, 28, has joined Bayern Munich on a four-year contract after Liverpool accepted a bid worth £65.5m from the Bundesliga champions.

Upon the completion of his move, the Colombian explained how he had “fulfilled his duty” at Liverpool after winning four trophies – one Premier League, one FA Cup and two League Cups – since his arrival from Porto in 2022.

When asked about his reason for joining Bayern in a press conference on Thursday, Diaz said: “FC Bayern fit perfectly with my aims. I wanted to move to a big, ambitious team – this club has incredible history. We want to win everything. My aim is to help the club and have success as quickly as possible."

German outlet BILD reported that former Fulham midfielder and English speaker Joao Palhinha was acting as an interpreter for his new teammate.

The outlet wrote: “The two emerged from the locker room together. They started training together on the pitch. Aside from a brief exchange of jokes with Leon Goretzka (30), the new signing mostly focused on Palhinha during breaks. Díaz often beamed during his second session with his new teammates.”

However, Diaz may soon have to rely on someone else as the Portugal international is set to move on from Bayern, having played just 25 times during his first campaign since his £47.5m move from Fulham last summer.

Also Thursday, The Guardian reported that Tottenham Hotspur are hopeful of signing the 30-year-old on loan after opening talks with Bayern regarding a potential return to the Premier League. It is claimed that the German side are willing to sanction a move, although it is unclear whether any deal would include an option or obligation to make the deal permanent.

Palinha would become Spurs’ sixth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai.
