The reason for Jamal Musiala’s two successive fainting scares, mere days apart during Bayern Munich’s pre-season, has been revealed by Vincent Kompany.
The Bundesliga superstar collapsed last weekend in a friendly versus Leipzig, then did so again against Heidenheim on Tuesday during a 4-2 win.
On both occasions, Musiala was able to exit the pitch himself, with minimal assistance from medical staff. He took to Instagram following Tuesday’s match to reveal his diagnosis.
The 23-year-old confessed he had been diagnosed with “brief, temporary episodes of absence” but allayed concerns that it could spell the end of his footballing career.

Musiala also revealed that such occurrences are caused by a neurological dysfunction; however, they remain “easily treatable.”
The Bayern Munich youngster then clarified that there are no additional risks beyond the episodes described, and that he is working alongside the Bundesliga club to ensure his health remains protected.

Now, the 23-year-old’s boss at club level, Kompany, has revealed the reason for Musiala’s fainting episodes, beyond merely a diagnosis.
Kompany and Max Eberl explain trigger for Musiala fainting
Speaking ahead of today’s Supercup match versus Borussia Dortmund, Kompany revealed that the episodes were likely caused by a change in Musiala’s treatment.
“I spoke with Jamal, he said, ‘No problem, you can say it,’” clarified the Bayern boss. “With his treatment, he changed some things and that had some side effects.
“That is normal, that during treatment, you try something else,” said Kompany, implying that Musiala’s episodes worsened as the result of an alteration in treatment, which the 23-year-old permitted him to reveal.
That narrative was supported, and further context, by sporting director Eberl, who revealed that the youngster changed his medication, presumably in the build-up to the Leipzig and Heidenheim friendlies.
“We’ve known about it the entire last season,” Eberl confessed. “The players also knew about it. For us, it’s become part of everyday life.
“He changed something in his medication, which is why these situations became clear. We will give him all our support, have already done so, and will continue to do so. We’re doing this together.”
It appears that Musiala's recent episodes weren't indicative of a health issue worsening, or rearing its head, but an already-known condition flaring due to medication alteration.
When asked whether Musiala will be a crucial component of Bayern Munich’s success in 2026-27, Kompany stated plainly that he expects the 23-year-old to deliver.
“I am completely calm,” said the Bayern boss. “I now expect the counterattack from Jamal. I have the feeling that he now has all the means to deliver these answers. For me, as a coach, I know he has taken a huge step forward.”
The youngster experienced a six-month sidelining from July 2025 until January 2026, and is anticipated to re-discover career best form for Bayern Munich this season.
Despite injury woes during the 2025-26 season, Musiala was able to deliver 11 goal contributions in 24 games. In the Bundesliga, en-route to yet another German top-flight title, the 23-year-old bagged seven goal involvements in 685 minutes of play.
