Spurs beat nine man Liverpool 2-1 in North London but the spotlight is on the officials

To say Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 win over Liverpool last night was eventful would be a bit of an understatement.

The two sides clashed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a Premier League encounter that is being spoken about as much for refereeing decisions as it is the action that unfolded out on the pitch.

Curtis Jones was sent off after 26 minutes for a foul on Yves Bissouma, with a red card being produced following VAR intervention - and it would not be the first time the remote official was a talking point.

Not long after going down to 10 men, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead when Luis Diaz slotted home, only to see it ruled out for offside by the linesman, with VAR not getting involved.

However, the PGMOL has subsequently confirmed it was in fact onside, and that the goal should have stood.

Spurs took the lead after Diaz's strike was ruled out when Son Heung-min slotted home, but Liverpool equalised in first half stoppage time thanks to Cody Gakpo's finish on the turn.

Jurgen Klopp's side went down to nine men when Diogo Jota was shown two yellow cards in quick succession with around 20 minutes remaining.

It looked like the spoils were going to be shared, only for Spurs to collect all three points when deep in injury time, Liverpool defender Joel Matip turned Pedro Porro's cross into his own net.

But even more controversy has emerged after the encounter, with Liverpool fans noticing a Spurs player ought to have received a second yellow card.

Destiny Udogie was booked in first half stoppage time and was on a yellow card when, after being fouled himself, he made a yellow card gesture towards the referee concerning Jota.

That gesture, however, now comes with a booking and means that the referee should have given Udogie his marching orders - and Liverpool fans have been pointing this out on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, X, to voice their outrage.

"Disgusting not just from VAR but Simon Hooper too."
