Eagle-eyed fans have spotted an error made by Liverpool when announcing their FA Cup fourth-round opponents.

The draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup took place on Monday, ahead of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Tottenham will face holders Manchester City in a heavyweight fourth-round tie, while Chelsea will take on title contenders Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

United will be away either to League Two's Newport County or National League side Eastleigh. Meanwhile, Maidstone United, the lowest-ranked club left in the competition, visit Championship high-flyers Ipswich.

Elsewhere, either Bristol Rovers, 10th in League One, or Championship outfit Norwich will travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

When announcing the draw, however, Liverpool’s media team made a major blunder that was picked up by fans on X, formally Twitter.

The club mistakenly announced that they may be facing Bristol City rather than the Championship side’s City rivals.

The club tweeted: “We’ll face either Norwich City or Bristol City in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.”

The post was accompanied by a graphic which included the Bristol City crest.

In response to the blunder one fan said: “Hopefully the prospect of both Bristol Rovers AND Bristol City playing replays against higher league opposition at home next week will mean the rest of football will stop mixing them up and will stop calling both just ‘Bristol’ for once.”

Another person said: “Big clubs live in their own world, don’t they…. Although tbf there is only one team in Bristol…”

The full fourth-round draw is as follows:
