Premier League club in danger of receiving TWO points deductions this season

It could prove disastrous for the club if they are found guilty.

Reports suggest that one Premier League club could face TWO points deductions this season for breaching spending rules.

The 2024/25 Premier League season got underway on Friday, as Manchester United defeated Fulham 1-0 at Old Trafford in the season opener.

More action is set to get underway this afternoon, as Brentford host Crystal Palace and champions Manchester City face Chelsea at the Etihad.

But for one Premier League club a series of points deductions could be coming their way just weeks after the start of the 2024/25 season.

As reported by The Sun, Leicester City could be set to face two points deductions for breaching financial spending regulations.

The Midlands club is currently under investigation for two separate breaches, meaning that they would face two sets of point deductions if they are found guilty in both cases.

Profit and Sustainability Rules were put in place to ensure that clubs in the English leagues do not spend more than they earn to prevent clubs with wealthy owners gaining an unfair advantage.

A club can report losses to a certain limit, but if it exceeds this then they are subject sanctions like fines or a points deduction.

Several clubs faced with this issue going into the season, including Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United, but only Leicester appear likely to face punishment after they failed to sell enough players this summer.

The newly-promoted club are reportedly under investigation for breaching the £105million loss limit for the financial period ending in 2022-23.

Between 2020 and 2023, Leicester financial losses mounted up to a shocking £215.3million, far exceeding the loss limit.

If this were to happen it could be disastrous for the Foxes as they look likely to battle relegation from the Premier League having finished on top of the Championship last season.

Last season Everton suffered the same fate, as they were charged twice for breaching PSR rules.

Despite this, the Merseyside club were able to evade relegation to the Championship finishing the season 14 points clear of the drop with a total of 40.

Instead, Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United dropped down at the end of the season.
