FIFA are facing calls to introduce an emergency 15-day transfer window amid chaotic scenes in one of Europe's biggest leagues.

Typically there are two transfer windows in world football, with one taking place in the summer and another occurring in the winter.

Exact dates vary by federation and league depending on the sporting calendar but earlier this year FIFA made the surprise call of introducing a third transfer window.

The special window lasted between 1 June and 10 June and applied exclusively to the 32 clubs appearing in the Club World Cup tournament in the United States, which began on 14 June in Miami.

The move allowed Real Madrid to have Trent Alexander-Arnold in their ranks earlier than expected, with Los Blancos paying Liverpool £8.4 million for his services.

However, there is now pressure on FIFA to create an unprecedented transfer window in Turkey after football in the country was plunged into mayhem amid a gambling storm.

Earlier this month, the Turkish football federation suspended 149 referees and assistant referees following an investigation which uncovered betting on matches.

The governing body would later confirm that 1,024 players had been suspended pending an investigation.

As part of the probe, eight people have been arrested, including Eyupspor Chairman Murat Ozkaya - as per the Anadolu news agency.

27 of the suspended players are from the Turkish Super Lig, including Istanbul giants Galatasaray and Besiktas, who issued a statement where they said they had “full faith” in their two players implicated.

TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu branded the current predicament as a "moral crisis in Turkish football" and one which has led to a request to FIFA for an imminent emergency transfer window.

"Due to the precautionary transfer of 1,024 football players to the PFDK, negotiations have been initiated urgently with FIFA to grant a 15-day transfer and registration period in addition to the 2025-2026 winter transfer period, only at the national level, in order for clubs to complete their squad deficiencies," the TFF said, as per Reuters.

The investigation found that 371 of 571 active referees had betting accounts, with one official betting 18,227 times.
