Flamengo captain Diego invites Maracana stadium cleaners to celebrate Copa do Brasil trophy win

Flamengo captain Diego invites Maracana stadium cleaners to celebrate Copa do Brasil trophy win

A touch of class from the Brazilian midfielder following Flamengo's penalty shootout win against Corinthians.

In a wonderful show of respect, Flamengo captain Diego Ribas celebrated the club's recent Copa do Brasil trophy win with a group of street sweepers who clean the Maracana.

The 37-year-old, well known for his time in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg, is reportedly set to end his trophy-laden spell at Flamengo after last week's Copa do Brasil win against Corinthians.

It could well be a fitting way to end Diego's memorable six-year stint with the Brazilian outfit. In fact, one of his last acts as a Mengão player might be an incredible one.

The former Fenerbahce midfielder decided to get the Maracana cleaners involved in the post-match celebrations – a gesture that has gone viral on social media in recent days. This is great.

In the aftermath of Flamengo's dramatic penalty shootout win against Corinthians, captain Ribas opened up about the club's win.

“During this season, we managed to prove the strength of this group," he said. "Dorival [the manager] has managed to extract the best from each one, we have a sensational group.

"That was our conversation in the locker room, we entered the field with the crowd screaming champion, so our posture has to be that of a champion."

Ahead of the the Corinthians game last week, Arturo Vidal viewed his father's funeral on social media after deciding to stay in Brazil to play in the Copa do Brasil final.

On Tuesday, the player's father, Erasmo, passed away following a cardiac arrest at a racecourse in Santiago, Chile, whilst looking after his son's animals.

The 61-year-old's funeral was on Thursday, but the Flamengo midfielder didn't attend the service as he was unable to travel back to his home country from Brazil.

The midfielder, meanwhile, decided to play for his team in the final.

Vidal's sister Ambrar broadcast the service on Instagram Live, with the 35-year-old tuning into the broadcast and breaking down in tears.

Before the match, the five time Serie A winner took to social media, saying, "Daddy, today I’ll miss your good luck message before the match. But I know that you’ll be supporting us from Heaven.

"We’ll win this cup and the next one for you and for everyone who supports me on a daily basis."
