FIFPRO is 'shocked' at reports that Iranian player Amir Nasr-Azadani could face execution after campaigning for women's rights.

There have been anti-government protests in the country since September following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

It's alleged Amini died in police custody after not following the nation's strict dress code.

Nasr-Azadani last played in the Persian Gulf Pro League for Tractor S.C.

FIFPRO, representatives for over 65,000 footballers worldwide, responded to the widespread reports on Monday evening.

The statement reads: "FIFPRO is shocked and sickened by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country.

"We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment."

Iran were present at this year's World Cup alongside England in Group B. Prior to their first group game against the Three Lions, players refused to sing the national anthem in silent protest.

Supporters inside the various stadiums around Qatar were seen holding shirts with 'Mahsa Amini 22' on the back.

Iran stars went back to singing the national anthem for their other two group games against Wales and the USMNT.

Manager Carlos Queiroz received criticism for comments he made following Iran's 6-2 defeat to England.

Several players in his squad received criticism for not speaking out about protests in the country prior to the tournament.

Queiroz told Iran fans to 'stay at home' if they couldn't back the team.

He said to reporters per ESPN: "In 2014, and 2018, we had full support from the fans. And now you saw what happened today.

"That's why my duty, it is probably to invite the fans who are here already to support the team or they should stay home. Why did they come here to be against the team? We don't need them.

"It's much better they stay home. To have fans who only support the team when we are winning, we don't need them. It's something that the players can feel when they are playing."

Iran finished third in Group B with three points. They bounced back from defeat to England with a 2-0 victory over Wales.

They were then eliminated after losing 1-0 to the USMNT.
