Donald Trump had a damning response when asked about ticket prices at the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament will kick off on June 11th, with the US, co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, scheduled to start their campaign the following day on June 12th (June 13th at 2am BST).

It's the first World Cup to be held in North America this century, with ticket prices a defining topic since March's announcement.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently defended the pricing strategy, which has been called 'extortionate' by fan groups.

Group stage games for this year's World Cup are priced based on the popularity of the teams involved. Previously, group stage games had a flat rate.

Trump was asked about the cost of watching games live during an interview with the New York Post.

The USMNT face Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in their Group D opener, with tickets currently costing $1000 (Ā£736).

After hearing that amount, Trump instantly replied: "I did not know that number.

"I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn't pay it either, to be honest with you."

Fans are already having to pay inflated prices for tickets on the resale market. FIFA takes a 30% fee - 15% from buyer and seller - of every ticket sold through their official platform.

Trump later added that he'd like those who voted for him in the 2024 presidential election to be able to attend any game they want.

He added: "If people from Queens and Brooklyn and all of the people that love Donald Trump can't go, I would be disappointed, but, you know, at the same time, it's an amazing success.

"I would like to be able to have the people that voted for me to be able to go."

Infantino's response to $2.3million World Cup final ticket

Last month, four tickets for the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19th were listed on the market for an astonishing $2.3million (Ā£1.69million).

Infantino joked he would personally gift whoever bought those tickets a 'hot dog and Coke', before making a more serious point about ticket prices.

He declared: "If some people put on the resale market some tickets for the final at $2million, number one, it doesn't mean that the tickets cost $2million, and number two, it doesn't mean that somebody will buy these tickets.

"In the US, it is permitted to resell tickets as well, so if you were to sell tickets at a price which is too low, these tickets will be resold at a much higher price.

"And as a matter of fact, even though some people are saying that the ticket prices we have are high, they still end up on the resale market at an even higher price, more than double our price."
