Former England trio Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have all had their say on Gareth Southgate - with three different responses.

Southgate's resignation was announced on Tuesday, just two days after the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

His reign ends after eight years and 105 games, including two Euros finals and one World Cup semi final.

The Football Association have now started the process of replacing Southgate, with FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott leading the charge.

A whole host of names have been linked with the vacancy and Lineker believes former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must be approached.

However, fresh developments say he is already not in the running for the post.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast prior to Southgate's departure being confirmed, he asked: "Wouldn’t you go all out for Jurgen Klopp?”

Richards replied: "I’d go one bigger – Pep. Why not?"

Lineker doubted Guardiola was realistically attainable despite reports claiming England would be prepared to wait for the Catalan to leave Manchester City.

Richards said he "would love" him in the England hotseat.

The former Spurs striker then continued to put forward his case for Klopp, stating

"He’ll have had a bit of a rest".

The 57-year-old is enjoying a lengthy break from football but Shearer asked whether "England would go for a German manager?” - even if he has spent a good chunk of time on these shores.

However, the former England skipper thinks Eddie Howe, currently in charge of his beloved Newcastle, is the frontrunner.

Shearer explained: “I’m for England and English managers. Howe would be the outstanding candidate. There’s a lot going on at Newcastle. The guys who appointed Eddie have now left.”

Lineker added: “He’s a front-foot manager. He’s young. He’s got a real energy to his football.”

England Under 21's boss Lee Carsley is also believed to be in the frame and could take the same path as Southgate.

FA chiefs have said they have an interim solution in place if necessary, ahead of games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.
