Eddie Howe has already made his feelings clear on taking the England job.

The Three Lions fell to a 2-1 loss against Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday after Mikel Oyarzabal scored a late sucker-punch winner.

England, whose wait for a men’s major trophy will enter its 60th year, have become the first team in history to lose two consecutive Euro finals.

Upon the defeat, there has been much talk around Southgate’s future, with the England boss having been previously coy about the prospect of continuing in the role.

Howe has long been touted as a possible alternative, with the Newcastle boss having in the past spoken about the prospect of succeeding Southgate.

Speaking to the Overlap, courtesy of Sky Bet, before the tournament, Howe said: “Talking on the [England] national team, my big memories were watching you [Gary Neville] play for England.

"That era was very much me in my early years forming a love with England and wanting them to do well, having that feeling of devastation when we didn’t quite make it over the line.

"I loved that feeling of watching the national team, I was submersed in it. I love England and I hope they go on to win the Euros this summer, and I think they can.

"I love Gareth [Southgate] and I’ve got a real determination for England to win. I’ve never really thought about international football for me, personally. Who knows what will happen in the future.”

Southgate promised ahead of the Euro 2024 final he would make a quick decision about his England future.

“The way my emotions have gone over the last five weeks, it would be ridiculous for me to think about anything beyond this game,” he said.

“We’ve got time to make decisions and I won’t need weeks, but also I think I’ve earned the right to give myself a few days just to think things through.

“I know where it would have been if we went out in the group stage, that’s for sure. I have a pretty good idea in my head.”
