“I would fly-kick my TV” - UK fans in disbelief over feature in Super Bowl coverage that you’d never see in football

You would never see it in football.

Fans are in disbelief at a feature on CBS’ Super Bowl coverage.

On Sunday, Patrick Mahomes threw a walk-off touchdown to Mecole Hardman in overtime to see the Kansas City Chiefs dramatically edge past the San Francisco 49ers and claim a 25-22 victory at Super Bowl LVIII.

The victory sees Andy Reid's side become the first back-to-back champions since 2003/2004.

Any fans watching CBS’ coverage of the showpiece event would have been surprised to see several Nickelodeon characters appear on the broadcast and offer explainers of various rules during the game.

For example, during a holding call, Dora the Explorer popped up on the screen and explained the decision.

Once Dora had succinctly described what constitutes a holding penalty she said, “Say it with us - players no holding!” The commentator subsequently repeated the phrase.

Dora was among several Paramount characters and properties to feature during the Super Bowl broadcast, with SpongeBob SquarePants and his side-kick Patrick also making appearances.

This caught the eye of several UK viewers, more accustomed to TNT Sports’ Champions League coverage or Sky Sports’ Premier League broadcasts.

Writing on X, one person said: “I’m crying imagine your team has bagged a 90th min winner, it goes to VAR and Dora the explorer starts explaining it for you.”

Another wrote: “Nah imagine if Dora holds up a sign saying No Goal: Offside.”

A third said: “Can you f***ing imagine this kind of s*** in football? If I saw Peppa Pig explaining why Raheem Sterling’s goal against Tottenham in the UCL was disallowed I’d have booted my TV into f***ing oblivion.”

Similarly, a Real Madrid supporter said: “Can you imagine Dora the explorer popping up at the bottom of the screen when a Spanish ref denies Real Madrid a clear penalty for like the 100th time in a game? I would fly kick my TV.”
