Adrian Newey was reportedly forced to miss the Miami Grand Prix after being admitted to hospital to treat a ’bout of illness.’
The five-week wait for the return of Formula One finally ended as the first US-based race of the season took place in Miami on May 3.
Given the extended time away from the track, all 11 teams were able to spend more time adjusting to the new regulations introduced for the 2026 season after gathering data at the opening three races of the season.
Perhaps more so than any other team, fans were excited to see how Aston Martin would perform in Miami following their disastrous start to the year despite coming into 2026 with a massive amount of hype around them.

But things didn't exactly go well for the Silverstone-based team in Miami as drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finished 15th and 17th respectively in a race that saw four drivers fail to finish.
And they did so without the guidance of team principal Newey who was absent from the race as he reportedly required hospital treatment after suffering a "bout of illness."
As reported by the Daily Mail, the 67-year-old was admitted to hospital ahead of the race but is now "mostly working from home" as he recovers "from an issue that has beset him the last few weeks."
Newey has not attended a race since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne back in March, with reports suggesting his contract only requires him to attend between 10-14 races of the 24 Grands Prix season.
It is believed that Newey can choose which races to attend depending on when he thinks he will bring the most value to the team and can best help maximise their results.
Aston Martin have since responded to the rumours, telling the Mail: “We don’t comment on personal matters relating to any of our team members.
“Adrian is working and was on campus last week.”
Adrain Newey set to be replaced as team principal before the end of the season
It's fair to say that Aston Martin's start to the 2026 season has been nothing short of a complete disaster.
Following the first four races of the season the British team are yet to secure a single point due to the car struggling with severe vibrations from its new Honda engine.
Therefore, it should perhaps come as no surprise that it has been widely reported that Newey will vacate the role of Aston Martin team principal in the near future.
As it stands, former Audi boss Jonathan Wheatley is believed to be the leading candidate to replace Newey, who will remain at the team in another role and is leading the hunt for his replacement himself.
