Lewis Hamilton had an awkward conversation with Max Verstappen after the F1 Canadian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton had a slightly awkward conversation with Max Verstappen after the pair finished on the podium in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Verstappen won his fourth consecutive race in the Red Bull, finishing 9.5 seconds ahead of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard was nursing brake cooling issues, however, and felt he could have won the race otherwise.

Hamilton came home in third after briefly threatening a late challenge on Alonso, but finished over four seconds behind.

It was an entertaining race between the two F1 veterans for the latter podium places, with Hamilton getting the jump on his rival at the first corner.

After a safety car period, Alonso fought back and overtook Hamilton on the back straight to restore his second place position.

But neither driver was a match for Verstappen in the end, who further extended his championship lead and drew level with the legendary Ayrton Senna on races won.

And the drivers shared a slightly awkward chat after the Grand Prix had ended.

Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso chat after Canadian GP

As is customary after any race, the three drivers on the podium sat down in the cooldown room, where they watched the action back.

With three chairs facing each other, the cameras on and in the immediate aftermath of a 70-lap race, deep conversation isn't exactly easy to come by in those situations.

And after a brief period of silence between Hamilton and Verstappen after removing their race helmets in the room, the Mercedes star decided to discuss the race with his fellow driver.

He began: "Was your car stiff?" Verstappen then simply replied: "Yeah."

When asked if the Red Bull car bounced a lot, the Dutchman said: "Yeah, I mean the track is also very bumpy, but yeah."

The pair then spoke briefly about tyre degradation, and the parts of the track which were hardest on the car.

Verstappen then asked Hamilton about his quicker last stint, to which the 38-year-old replied: "Yeah, it was better. It was feeling pretty decent. I struggled [at the start] when the car was heavy. We suck in the lower speed corners.

"That's where you're just destroying me, out of the low speed. Pretty much all of them - your [car's] rear end is insane."

Alonso walked in, before then querying: "Mine?" Hamilton told the Spaniard his was 'awesome too'.

Once they were out of the cooldown room, Hamilton expanded more on his thoughts about the Grand Prix: "Well, firstly, quite an honour to be up there with two world champions. I was really excited to be third and just trying to be in that mix, but unfortunately we didn't have the pace today."
