Max Verstappen left furious over Lewis Hamilton's DNF in Spanish GP team radio that couldn't be aired on TV

Max Verstappen was left incensed over the circumstances that led to Lewis Hamilton's retirement at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton's Ferrari suffered a brake failure at the Circuito de Madring, dropping him from third to the back of the field and forcing him to retire.

He was involved in a lap one incident with Verstappen, which formed the basis of the Dutchman's ire after being ordered by his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to let Hamilton back through.

Hamilton started fourth on the grid in Madrid, but found himself battling for the race lead up the inside of turn one after a superb start.

The seven-time world champion had to back out of it and slotted in behind the McLaren, with Verstappen on the outside into turn one.

Verstappen took evasive action to avoid a collision but, in the process, kept the position and didn't immediately give it back.

He ended up taking second place from Kimi Antonelli after the Italian himself had to let Lando Norris back through for the race lead.

Verstappen's race engineer Lambiase told him to give the place back to Hamilton, which meant letting Drivers' Championship leader Antonelli through into second as well.

Despite his protests, Verstappen followed the team's order and slotted into fourth place, ahead of Hamilton's Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.

But Hamilton had been complaining of brake issues and, almost as soon as the swap was made, he began suffering a brake failure which dropped him down the field.

Verstappen was first to go past him, with the Brit then locking up and going off the circuit before rejoining.

Verstappen fumed over team radio: "He can give me the position now. ----ing -------. ----ing Mickey Mouse racing this is."

The rant was, unsurprisingly, not aired on live TV, with F1 bosses likely not taking too kindly to any direct criticism of the sport during a Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton ends lengthy F1 2026 streak

Hamilton's retirement means his record as the only driver to complete every racing lap during the 2026 season has come to an end.

His race engineer Carlo Santi said that there was a brake system failure, though could not elaborate.

Ferrari had attempted to keep Hamilton on track at first, with Santi stating: "Pedal will be long. Pedal will be long. Rear brakes now working but pedal will be long."

Clearly, the issue was too severe for Hamilton to continue and he was brought into the pits to retire.

The result means he cannot overtake George Russell, who started the race 10 points clear of him, for second place in the Drivers' Championship. Norris began the day in fourth place in the standings, 20 points behind Hamilton.
