Fernando Alonso claims Lewis Hamilton is 'lucky' to have his world titles

Fernando Alonso claims Lewis Hamilton is 'lucky' to have his world titles

Alonso reckons that one of Hamilton's former teammates could have five world titles, instead of the Mercedes driver.

Fernando Alonso has claimed that Lewis Hamilton is lucky to have won all of his Formula One world drivers' championships, claiming an ex teammate could have got five of them.

For as long as anyone can remember, Alonso and Hamilton have not exactly got on, with the former leaving McLaren after the rookie nearly won the world title in his first season in the car.

Since then the pair have had plenty of run ins as rivals in opposing team cars, leading to Alonso to call the seven time world champion and 'idiot' last year.

The British driver was quite understanding of the rant and Alonso later apologised and said it was just in the 'heat of the moment.'

In fact, just a few days ago it seemed like any bad blood was completely buried, with the Aston Martin driver saying, "Heโ€™s a legend of our sport.

"We saw in Australia, I think we spent the whole race within two seconds of distance, playing with the distance a little bit. He has no weak point, he does no mistakes.

"Heโ€™s a very tough competitor. To beat him, you need always something special. So this is the type of guys that you want to challenge."

Now though, the Spaniard has given a new insight into the titles that the 'legend' Hamilton has won, going as far as saying the 38-year-old has been lucky.

Alonso's thinking is that his former teammate at McLaren has been fortunate to have such a good car for a number of years, and Valtteri Bottas could have had five world titles himself.

"Yes, I still think he is one of the best in history, but at the same time he has been lucky or to have known how to be in a dominant car for many years," the two time world champion told Marca.

โ€œAnd when that happens, Michael Schumacher won seven titles, Lewis also seven, Verstappen is on his way to third, I won two."

Asked what would have happened if Hamilton hadn't been so 'lucky,' the 41-year-old added, "Another one for us and for all the drivers.

"If he had had any problems at Mercedes in those years, Bottas could have five titles. This is how it works."

After winning his world titles with Renault, Alonso's own bad luck, and poor choices, directly stopped him from adding any more trophies to his cabinet.

He certainly could be having the best luck of his life at the moment though, with some reports claiming that he's currently dating Taylor Swift.

The Aston Martin driver is certainly enjoying the speculation, whether it's true or not, and has had a couple of cheeky replies to the news.

Hamilton on the other hand has definitely lost his 'lucky' streak, with Mercedes now struggling to compete with Red Bull at the front of the grid.
