Premier League club banned from signing JJ Gabriel if he leaves Man Utd

Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel looks set to leave the club after an extraordinary turn of events this week.

The 15-year-old, dubbed 'Kid Messi', was expected to become United's youngest-ever player and make his senior debut in their Carabao Cup tie against Brighton on Wednesday night. However, he is now poised to leave after asking to cancel his registration with immediate effect.

Gabriel has a whole host of clubs interested in a potential deal should he force his way out of Old Trafford, but Premier League rivals Chelsea have already been banned from signing him.

Chelsea banned from JJ Gabriel deal

Chelsea are reportedly one of several sides that would like to sign Gabriel should he leave United. The problem is that they can't right now.

The Blues were given an immediate nine-month academy transfer ban and a £750,000 fine in March over the registration of academy players between 2019 and 2022, when Roman Abramovich was the owner of Chelsea.

It means they are unable to register any new academy signings for the rest of the calendar year, which could work against them in a potential deal for Gabriel.

The teenager is hoping to have his United contract terminated so that he can sign for an overseas club when he turns 16 on October 6. Real Madrid and Barcelona are both keen on a move should that happen, while there is also interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in a deal, though United sources insist they will not release Gabriel from his registration, which runs until the end of the season. Only in that scenario would it appear Chelsea have any chance of signing him.

Why does JJ Gabriel want to leave United?

Gabriel was expected to become United's youngest-ever player this week, although sources close to the 15-year-old are doubtful that was actually going to be the case.

The teenage forward has not trained with Michael Carrick's squad for several days amid issues between his family and the club over an unclear pathway to the first team.

United chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are directly involved in discussions with the player's family as they look to salvage the situation, with Gabriel reportedly unhappy over promises made during the summer that have not been fulfilled.

Gabriel was expected to play regularly during pre-season but featured for just eight minutes across four squads, while several other youngsters who have since left the club were given opportunities instead.

There was a further issue last week when Gabriel was not registered for the Champions League encounter with Sabah FK, despite Manuel Ugarte being included even though he is ruled out for the entire league phase of the competition, along with summer signing Tynan Thompson.

Although Gabriel could be added to the B List and feature in future Champions League games from next month, those close to the player do not believe that is a likely scenario. He instead wants to cancel his registration with immediate effect.
