Wout Weghorst finally got his hands on a trophy at the age of 30 after Manchester United won the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United ended a six-year trophy drought with victory in the Carabao Cup final but the triumph meant even more to Wout Weghorst.

The giant striker, signed on loan from Burnley, started the showpiece against Newcastle at Wembley and registered the assist for the second when Marcus Rashford's effort deflected off Sven Botman and over Loris Karius.

That contribution made Piers Morgan eat his words after the broadcaster/Cristiano Ronaldo fanboy criticised him early on.

Weghorst has only scored once for United in 12 appearances but he's provided much more than goals, pressing relentlessly off the ball and giving Rashford the licence to take up positions leading to his goals.

The Netherlands international made his professional debut in the second tier for FC Emmen back in 2012 but had never won a trophy in his career until Sunday.

And after United saw off Newcastle, the 30-year-old wanted to take it all in. He sat crouched on the byline and watched and listened to the sea of fans belt out chants in the stands.

He and club captain Harry Maguire were then filmed passionate singing the 'United Road' song alongside supporters in some brilliant scenes.

The former Wolfsburg man was later loudly cheered as he hoisted the trophy in the air in front of the fans, enjoying every single second of being a champion.

He had two near misses in finals back in his native Netherlands but made it third time lucky in collecting a winners' medal with United.

And after the game an emotional Weghorst admitted it is "childhood dream" to win a trophy with United.

“In the Netherlands I played two cup finals and lost both of them,” he said, as per The Mirror.

“This was the third time. Of course that's something special and of course you put in all the hard work, hard effort to get really something in your head.

“So, yeah, also for me it's personal and it's really nice to win a trophy

“I can do really tough or I can do really cool but, yeah, for me this is a childhood dream.

“A childhood dream to play for this amazing club, to play a final and also be important in this final with the second goal.

“So, yeah, I took a moment there at the end and that was the greatest moment of the evening.”
