Piers Morgan attempted to slam Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst early into the Carabao Cup final with Newcastle United with a comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Weghorst started up front for the Red Devils in Sunday's showpiece event at Wembley Stadium as Erik ten Hag's side ended a six-year wait for a trophy.

United ran out 2-0 winners over Newcastle thanks to Casemiro's header in the first half and an own goal from Magpies defender Sven Botman.

Around 19 minutes into the game, Talk TV host Morgan wasn't impressed with the performance of Weghorst, who is yet to find his goalscoring boots at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old has only scored once since joining on loan from Burnley in the January transfer window, although he offers much more than goals to the team.

Weghorst is a relentless presser and technically gifted despite his height indicating he'd be more of a traditional striker. His arrival was in response to Cristiano Ronaldo's abrupt departure in November.

Ronaldo is close friends with Morgan and gave an explosive interview late last year in which he discussed his frustrations with the United hierarchy, including Ten Hag.

The club were left with no choice but to terminate his contract, with Ronaldo officially joining Saudi Arabia outfit Al Nassr last month.

Morgan decided to bring Ronaldo up as Weghorst once again struggled to find the back of the net against Newcastle. He tweeted: "Manchester United fans trying to pretend they’d rather have Weghorst up front than Ronaldo is hilarious. He’s dreadful."

United then managed to go ahead through Casemiro before Weghorst played vital role in the second. He danced through the Newcastle defence before threading the ball through to Marcus Rashford. The in-form attacker scuffed his shot but it managed to hit Botman and float over Loris Karius.

Morgan did try to take a small victory from Weghorst not getting an official assist. He tweeted in reply to fans laughing at him: "The assist was Rashford, it was an own goal."

Supporters on social media still didn't let Morgan off, who they claimed is now shifting the goalposts after an upturn in form since Ronaldo's departure.

One person tweeted: "Since Ronaldo left and Weghorst came in United have been so much better and the results prove it. He runs more, holds the ball up better and presses defenders."

Another put: "He's begging at this point fr."

Someone added: "Let Ronaldo go. He's gone."

While someone said: "Thanks for that interview mate. You changed the course of our season."

Ronaldo is enjoying a purple patch in the Saudi Pro League. He scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 3-0 win over Damac, his second in as many games.
