Manchester United may have lost out on their dream striker signing after they stopped Bruno Fernandes' £100m transfer.

After United's Europa League final defeat, Fernandes said he intended to stay at United, but that he understood if the club wanted to sell him to raise money.

Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal pushed to sign the 30-year-old, reportedly offering Fernandes a contract worth £700,000 per week, as they sought a marquee signing prior to the FIFA Club World Cup.

They were even prepared to offer United a transfer fee between £80m and £100m, which could have been a valuable sum as the Red Devils embark on a rebuild under head coach Ruben Amorim.

One area they wanted to upgrade was up front, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both struggling. Napoli's Victor Osimhen was one man linked to Old Trafford.

The Nigerian has scored 85 goals over the past three seasons, bagging 37 times in 41 games last season on loan at Turkish side Galatasary.

But it now appears, he is set to move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: "EXCL: Al Hilal submit official bid to Napoli for Victor Osimhen as top target.

"Proposal worth €65m fixed fee plus €5m add-ons, decision up to Napoli now.

"This follows story revealed yesterday on Al Hilal in contact with Osimhen over salary/personal terms."

Who else will United target?

Another name on United fans' lips is the Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, partly because he played under Amorim in Portugal.

It appears the Swede would be open to joining Manchester United, despite them failing to qualify for Europe, according to talkSPORT.

Ben Jacobs added: "The Sporting striker remains a possibility for United, but any move will be dependent on outgoings and formal talks with Sporting are not yet underway.

"However, United head coach Ruben Amorim would relish linking up with his former player, and has kept in contact with him since moving to Old Trafford.

"Sporting want around £60million (€70m) for Gyökeres. This is a £25m reduction from his £85m release clause.

"Gyökeres has a verbal pact in place with Sporting allowing him to leave for less after committing to staying for the 2024/25 campaign in which he scored 54 goals in just 52 games and won the Primeira Liga title."

United attempted to sign young English forward Liam Delap, but he opted to sign for Chelsea instead, in a deal worth £30m.

But it appears they are still keen to add attacking options, alongside Matheus Cunha and their ongoing pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo.
