Manchester United could dent Liverpool’s chances of signing Alexander Isak. Here’s how.

The Sweden international has informed Newcastle he wants to explore his options this summer, and in turn, has not been included in Eddie Howe’s pre-season tour of Singapore.

When asked about Isak’s future, Newcastle boss Howe admitted on Sunday: "Of course there are things going on behind the scenes. Conversations that happen between Alex and ourselves and Alex and the club will stay private.

"He is very popular in the dressing room and would love him to continue his journey at Newcastle. There are no contract talks taking place, that will be for a later date, potentially.”

"I certainly hope he stays. It's football, who knows what the future will bring."

Isak has three years remaining on his contract at the club, and as per Sky Sports, Newcastle have valued that forward at around £150.

Liverpool are among the club’s said to be interested, despite the Reds signing Hugo Ekitike earlier in the summer.

The Merseyside club’s pursuit of Isak could be dented however, if Newcastle are unable to land a replacement.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is among the players Newcastle are thought to be interested in, though the Slovenian has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg wrote on X: “Manchester United and Newcastle are currently in talks with Benjamin Sesko‘s management.

“Both teams have presented their projects and financial offers.

“The decision now lies mainly with the player and his camp. Offers are expected to be formally submitted to RB Leipzig following the verbal agreement. However, NUFC are pushing a lot."

Should Sesko join United ahead of Newcastle it could disincentivise Newcastle from selling Isak.

Howe added: "I don't think we are distracted. We are here and we are focused. I have experienced it many times. I've sold players throughout my managerial career. There is a wider picture; there is a football club that has to make the decision.

"Whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle. We are in a strong position financially and are determined to be successful.

"I wouldn't put a timescale on it. It has to be right for the football club and they will make the right decision with all the information they have.

"It's up to us to make good decisions the other way and to improve the squad, regardless of Alex's situation. We want stability and the group to have a really good feeling."
