Man United and Chelsea to go head-to-head for Premier League star in one of the biggest deals of the summer

Man United and Chelsea to go head-to-head for Premier League star in one of the biggest deals of the summer

This would be a huge statement of intent by either Premier League side.

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly set to go head-to-head to complete what would be one of the biggest transfers of 2025.

United and Chelsea have both endured spells of poor form in recent months under Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca respectively.

Chelsea have won just three of their last 10 matches in all competitions, while United have won six games in all competitions in 2025 but suffered damaging home defeats to Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Part of the reason behind their form has been a lack of cutting edge in front of goal, with Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson not scoring in any of his last eight matches in all competitions.

Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund has scored just two Premier League goals all season, with Joshua Zirkzee netting on three occasions. It is instead Amad that has Amorim's main man, netting five league goals since the Portuguese took over.

And Cole Palmer has been Chelsea's leading goal outlet from attacking midfield, with 14 league goals.

All that points to both clubs being in need of another striking option - and they are reportedly set to go head-to-head for the same Premier League player.

Football Insider claim that they are targeting former Manchester City starlet Liam Delap, who has impressed for Premier League strugglers Ipswich this season.

The 22-year-old has scored nine goals in 23 matches for Kieran McKenna's side, with the added bonus being that most of those goals have come at key moments - including in wins over Chelsea and Tottenham.

Delap's rapidly improved pace, power and physical attributes have combined with his finishing ability to make him one of the division's deadliest marksmen in front of goal.

Delap was sent out on loan by City to gain experience at Championship sides Stoke City - where his father Rory famously played - Preston North End and Hull City, with the loan at the latter being where he really began to find his feet.

His form and development under the stewardship of Liam Rosenior encouraged Ipswich to sign him in the summer for a fee of £20 million.

While the size of that fee was questioned at the time given Delap's lack of top flight experience, he has seamlessly adapted to the demands of Premier League football and could make a further step up in the summer - even if Ipswich manage to stay in the division.
