Liverpool reportedly tried to make a massive signing this summer that would have shocked the Premier League.

The Reds were quiet in the 2024 summer transfer window, bringing in just two players to strengthen Arne Slot's squad in his first season as manager of the club.

Liverpool missed out on Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi early in the window, but signed Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, with the former immediately sent on loan to former club Valencia.

But, a new report has revealed that the Merseyside club tried to make another huge signing before the transfer window close on August 30.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool considered making a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who was the subject to a series of deadline day bids this summer.

Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli had a bid for Osimhen believed to total £67.3m plus add-ons accepted by Napoli, but failed to agree on a contract with the Nigerian striker and instead brought in Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Chelsea were also interested in securing the signature of Osimhen, but failed to agree a deal with either the player or Napoli ahead of the transfer window closing.

But the new report suggests that the Reds also tried to make a last minute move for the talented 25-year-old, but ultimately didn't make any formal bid as they believed that the finances were not doable.

Napoli were adamant that they would not accept any deal that was not a permanent transfer and Osimhen refused to take any pay cut to facilitate a move, both of which made a deal impossible for Liverpool.

However, even without a massive signing like Osimhen, Slot's start with Liverpool has gone perfectly as he has led the side to three back to back Premier League wins without conceding a goal.

Most recently, the Reds beat long-term rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in the final match before the first international break of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Slot said: "United started really aggressive and we had to fight through that period but if you go to Old Trafford you know there will be tough moments.

"But, in the end some nice goals and a deserved win I think."
