Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their stunning pursuit of Alexander Isak after Benjamin Sesko 'decided' to join Manchester United over Newcastle United.

Sesko has emerged as Man United and Newcastle's No.1 transfer target this summer.

The Magpies tabled an improved bid after their initial offer was rejected.

The Red Devils entered with a bid of their own, which was less than what their rivals were prepared to offer.

With two offers on the table, the Slovenian has set his sights on joining Man United despite Ruben Amorim's side having no European football following last season's dreadful Premier League campaign.

Sesko's desire to ply his trade at Old Trafford is not just a blow to Newcastle but also to Liverpool, who are keeping tabs on Isak ahead of the new season.

The Swede, who scored 23 league goals last season, wants to leave Newcastle, who would only sanction the player's sale if they can recruit a replacement.

Eddie Howe and the club had identified Sesko, but a transfer appears unlikely, with the player hellbent on signing for Man United.

As a result, Isak won't be allowed to leave Newcastle.

That's according to Craig Hope, who provided an update on Newcastle's transfer situation.

"NUFC had to pursue Sesko move, even though feeling was last week he favoured Man U," he said on X.

"But they were given encouragement too (no more so than Monday) & Man U offer was yet to come."

On other targets and Isak, the journalist added: "It will be back to other targets now... & impact on Isak is clear. He can’t go, as it stands."

What happens if Liverpool can't sign Alexander Isak this summer?

It's unclear what Liverpool will do in the market if they can't strike a deal with Newcastle for Isak.

But with the expected departure of Darwin Nunez and the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Arne Slot will likely want options in attack for the upcoming season.

Of course, Liverpool have already lured Hugo Ekitike to Anfield, but further reinforcements could be needed to meet the demands of next season.

Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, but talks have cooled.

However, if a deal for Isak is completely off the cards, then they could reignite their interest in Rodrygo and look to secure a deal before the window slams shut on September 1.
