Premier League issue statement after VAR disallows Bournemouth's third goal against Newcastle

Bournemouth thought they had scored a third goal against Newcastle, but the strike was chalked off.

The Premier League issued a statement after VAR intervened to disallow Bournemouth's third goal against Newcastle.

The Cherries went 1-0 up inside six minutes through Justin Kluivert, who put Bournemouth back in the lead just before half-time after Bruno Guimaraes had levelled matters with a header in the early kick-off.

Bournemouth looked to have increased their cushion to two goals when Dango Ouattara stabbed home around the our mark. However, Newcastle players appealed and a VAR review ensued, with man in the middle Stuart Attwell ultimately chalking off the strike.

It emerged that the ball had clearly gone out of play in the build-up to Ouattara finding the net when Sandro Tonali cleared on the stretch.

In a rare but completely correct decision, a corner was awarded to Bournemouth after the ball came off a Newcastle player last.

Shortly after the incident, PGMOL issued a statement on their Match Centre social media feed.

PGMOL wrotre: #NEWBOU - 61’ VAR OVERTURN. The referee’s call of goal for Bournemouth was checked by the VAR. As there was factual evidence that the ball was out of play in the build-up to the goal, the VAR recommended that the goal was disallowed."

Even if the right decision was reached, fans on social media aired their opinions after watching the goal being disallowed.

One fan on X said: The bournemouth goal getting ruled out is a bit unfair because Newcastle were preventing the corner. it’s the opposite of an advantage and in this case the goal should stand but the game is the game."

A second commented: "VAR in England is rubbish. Why will Bournemouth get punished when it was a Newcastle player that prevented the corner kick from being given?"

A third added: "Balls going out for a corner. Newcastle defender keeps it in play but Bournemouth score and then Newcastle argue it went out for a corner."

Another fumed: "That VAR call against Bournemouth doesn't sit right. Newcastle tried to avoid a corner, and benefit by essentially getting a free 30 seconds of football where if Bournemouth hits it out, Newcastle gets a goal kick, but if Bournemouth score, it's all scrubbed for a corner."

Kluivert would then bag his and Bournemouth's third in stoppage time, scoring his second hat-trick of the season and doing it on the ground where his father Patrick used to play.

Milos Kerkez completed the scoring for the visitors with a stunning strike to make it 4-1.
