Incredible stat emerges to sum up just how much Arne Slot has failed at Liverpool this season

A stat has emerged that sums up Liverpool and Arne Slot’s torrid 2025/26 campaign, just days before their trip to face rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Despite winning the Premier League at the first attempt in 2024/25, Slot has struggled to guide his Liverpool side to success this season.

The Reds fell well off the pace as Arsenal raced ahead early on, before a weak defence of their title followed. Liverpool are currently sitting fourth on 58 points, holding an eight-point buffer over sixth-placed Brighton.

Having spent around £414 million on players – Alexander Isak (£125 million), Florian Wirtz (£116 million), Hugo Ekitike (£69 million), Milos Kerkez (£40 million), Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5 million), Giovanni Leoni (£26 million) and Freddie Woodman (free) – many expected Slot’s side to defend their title at a canter, while also progressing to the latter stages of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League.

However, this has been far from the case. Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League after a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals last month, having already been eliminated by Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup fourth round in October and by Manchester City in the FA Cup in April.

Unfortunately for Slot, this means Liverpool have become the club to have spent the most money in a single season without winning a trophy, ahead of Chelsea, who spent almost £400 million in 2023/24, according to Transfermarkt’s estimations.

The club will likely get their chequebook out again this summer as they bid to replace the departing Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson.

Slot has already said that Liverpool operate a “sell-to-buy” strategy when it comes to transfers.

The Dutchman explained: “Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer, as we lost Trent [Alexander-Arnold], and this model of the club means we need to sell, usually, to buy. So it’s a big challenge.

“It was already a challenge last season. It’s going to be a challenge again this summer.

“This club has also shown many times that this model works, and we can be very successful with this model."
