Jamie Carragher verbally dismantles Bruno Fernandes' antics in Manchester derby during must-see MNF segment

Jamie Carragher has slammed Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes for his "really poor" antics in Sunday's Manchester derby.

Man United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to 10-man Manchester City at Old Trafford after VAR allowed Erling Haaland's controversial winning goal to stand, despite Enzo Fernandez interfering with play from an offside position.

City were reduced to 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off midway through the first half and Bruno Fernandes orchestrated that contientious red card.

In a silly altercation between both players, Foden fell on top of the ball after being challenged by Fernandes, who soon made contact with the City midfielder as he attempted to kick the ball away.

The Portuguese international appeared to catch him on the bottom of his back, which caused an angry reaction as he lashed out at the United maestro with his boot.

Fernandes then went down clutching his stomach, and only seconds later, Michael Oliver brandished a red card for Enzo Maresca's No. 47.

Many disagreed with the decision to send off Foden, who will miss three matches for 'violent conduct', after the 32-year-old overreacted to the contact in an attempt to get the Man City star dismissed.

It was felt that both players should have been shown a yellow card instead, and that is a sentiment shared by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who felt Fernandes was the "guilty party".

"I actually [think] two yellow cards is enough. Phil Foden put his foot into him, but his foot's already high, it's not like he's lashed out and kicked out. But for me, the guilty party is Bruno [Fernandes]," Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

"Bruno's fouled him, that's football, he's then kicked him when he's on the floor, then he's rolled around - he's hardly been touched and he's rolling round to get somebody sent off... I don't think Bruno Fernandes comes out of that looking well at all, I think it's really poor from him."

Carragher wasn't happy with Fernandes rolling around on the floor after minimal contact was made, but it didn't matter in the end, as City prevailed at Old Trafford in the most controversial of circumstances.

Man United were outfought, outran and ultimately outclassed by their fiercest rivals, and perhaps Michael Carrick can shoulder some of the blame.

He brought Benjamin Sesko on for Youri Tielemans in the 67th minute, and in turn, that meant Fernandes dropped into a deeper midfield position.

Carragher noticed this late on in the game when Fernandes was marking Haaland inside his own half, while Diogo Dalot - who has far less quality than his Portuguese compatriot - was occupying a position high and wide on the right.

"The best player in the Premier League, the best player by a mile in Manchester United's team is Bruno Fernandes. Where is Bruno Fernandes?" Carragher questioned.

"He’s marking Erling Haaland. This is in the 88th minute. Michael Carrick wouldn't have wanted that. But the point being is that because he made that tactical decision to put him in central midfield, he's ended up there because Bruno likes to get involved in everything.

Now a few minutes later, 90 plus two, Manchester Derby. Three minutes to go. 1-0 down against 10 men. Bruno Fernandes is here marking Erling Haaland, the deepest player twice in two attacks going forward than any other Manchester United player there.

"And again you're leaving the ball with a guy [Dalot] who's got no quality and the best player in the Premier League looking after Haaland.”

Man United will look to bounce back from this defeat against Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before travelling to Fulham in the Premier League.
