Germany head coach Joachim Low made an outrageous claim that his infamous scratch and sniff provides "adrenaline and concentration."

The 61-year-old German was previously at the centre of controversy over his scratch and sniff during Euro 2016 in France.

Low was spotted reaching down the front and back of his trousers in Germany's 2-0 win over Ukraine at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille.

The 2014 World Cup winner once again grabbed headlines when he appeared to sniff his fingers while in the dugout for Germany's 1-0 defeat to France at Euro 2020.

Speaking after the scratch and sniff incident in 2016, Low apologised for his actions and claimed he would "try to behave differently in the future."

He explained: "I saw the pictures as well and obviously sometimes you do things subconsciously. It happened and I am sorry.

"It was adrenaline and concentration. I will try to behave differently in the future."

Biochemist Dr Patrick Healy told SB Nation at the time: "I have not done any research on this, but I can't see any reason adrenaline would do that.

"It makes no sense at all. The only explanation is that he was fidgety because of it, but that's stretching it."

Low, who succeeded Jurgen Klinsmann as Germany manager in 2006, is set to step down as head coach of the national team after this summer's Euro 2020.

Former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick will be appointed the new Germany head coach after the Euros.

Germany bounced back from their Euro 2020 defeat to France with a sensational 4-2 comeback win against Portugal on Saturday.

Low's side are second in Group F and are one point behind 2018 World Cup champions France.

Germany will play their final Group F clash on Wednesday against Hungary at the Allianz Arena.
