One Arsenal fan has made a bold claim after suggesting that Shkodran Mustafi is having a better season than Virgil van Dijk.

Oh, yes! Settle in for this one, as it is no doubt going to leave many, many football fans scratching their heads.

The Arsenal supporter took to Twitter to post an "Unpopular opinion," giving a side-by-side comparison of the Gunners centre-back's stats with the towering Liverpool centre-back's stats.

If the pot hadn't been stirred enough, then the Arsenal fan ended the tweet by suggesting that Mustafi "cost £40m less and is a better player."

Check it out below.

Mustafi came under fierce criticism for his performance against Crystal Palace on the weekend.

In fact, it's safe to say that the 27-year-old German defender has polarised many fans, so much so that a petition recently surfaced online that called for him to be handed down a life sentence.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher slammed Mustafi for his performance in Arsenal's 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

"I think it's a killer blow for Arsenal in terms of top four in the Premier League," he said. "Obviously, they have another chance in the Europa League as well.

"I wasn't surprised by this [Mustafi] -- he's been a mess since he joined the club really and this is another example of it. He's at fault for the second goal as well.

"[Unai] Emery made changes and I can totally understand it. Something has to give in the squad.

"In terms of the firepower in the team, you still expected them to win. I think it's a massive blow for Arsenal's top-four chances."

Van Dijk, on the other hand, has had a superb season at Anfield as Liverpool continue to keep pace with Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

The 27-year-old Netherlands captain has also been nominated for PFA Players' Player of the Year and is tipped to win the award ahead of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling.
