An emotional Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after he watched unseen footage of his late father showering him with praise for his achievements.

Ronaldo's father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, tragically passed away at the age of 52 due to liver failure after battling alcoholism.

The Juventus superstar was only 20 when his dad died, but Ronaldo couldn't hold back his flood of emotions during a 2019 chat with Piers Morgan.

During the Good Morning Britain interview, Ronaldo was shown footage of his father expressing his pride at the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar's success.

The 36-year-old Portuguese forward broke down in tears as he admitted that he "never saw that video."

Ronaldo told former GMB host Morgan: "I never saw the video. I never saw that video. Unbelievable."

When Morgan asked Ronaldo how it felt to hear his dad talk about his incredible achievements, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner added: "Yes, a lot.

"I think the interview would be funny, but I didn't expect to cry. But I never saw these images.

"I don't know where you... I have to have these images to show my family.

"But I really don't know my father 100 per cent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard."

Ronaldo's mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, has previously spoken about the hardship of being around Aveiro during his battle with alcoholism.

The 66-year-old admitted: "He was drunk almost every day. I never really knew him well. I would have liked him to have been around more.

"Although he never mistreated his children, I became his victim."

Ronaldo also opened up about his tough time in Portugal when he was a child and how staff from a McDonald's branch helped save him from going hungry.
