The Glazer family's new price for Man Utd sale would be most expensive in history

It will take a lot of money for United's controversial owners to sell.

It's believed Manchester United owners the Glazers would demand up to $6 billion to sell the club.

Supporters at Old Trafford have been unhappy with the ownership since their arrival in 2005, with many questioning how a takeover was sanctioned in the first place.

A number of loans were taken out to purchase United and there's been a massive lack of investment in recent years.

The first eight years of the Glazers' tenure were covered by the success of Sir Alex Ferguson on the pitch, but since his final Premier League title and retirement in 2013, United have regressed to their worst state since the 1970s.

Protests against the Glazer family have taken place in recent years and following a dismal start to this Premier League season, former United board member Michael Knighton recently claimed he was putting together a 'hostile takeover' with a consortium.

It's seen everyone ask the same the question. Just how much will it take?

James Robson of Goal has been informed the fee will likely be in excess of $6 billion which would make a sale the most expensive of a club in history.

That honour currently belongs to Chelsea, who were sold by Roman Abramovich to American businessman Todd Boehly for a whopping $5.2 billion in May.

United are currently bottom of the Premier League after losing their opening two games of the season to Brighton and Brentford.

Despite finishing sixth last term with their lowest-ever points tally, new manager Erik ten Hag hasn't been backed in the transfer market.

Six first-team players departed upon the expiry of their contracts in July and United have only added Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez to their squad.

All of their top six rivals has strengthened significantly and the gap in quality appears to be getting larger with every passing year.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) released a statement following Saturday's 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Brentford.

MUST rarely comment on individual results but felt it was necessary following a dismal display.

"What we have witnessed tonight is an embarrassment - no, a humiliation - for Manchester United fans," the statement reads. "And yet in many ways it was not a surprise. It feels like the culmination of a long-term direction of travel.

"MUST hold the owners of the club primarily responsible for this new low in our decade of decline. Sir Alex papered over the cracks, but since 2013 the consequences of our owners has been plain to see.

"On behalf of Manchester United fans everywhere, we demand urgent and radical change. And we as fans - all of us - need to stick together. Fans unity, with one voice aimed at the owners and the club, is needed more than ever right now.

"Finally, as the fans in the ground today showed, we will always support the shirts. Support the team, and defend the club. Our flag is deepest red, and we will never die."
