Real Madrid have held talks over a return to the club for Jose Mourinho but the Portuguese manager will only come back if two major demands are met.
Real parted company with Xabi Alonso mere months after appointing the former midfielder in the Santiago Bernabeu and replaced him with another ex player in Alvaro Arbeloa, who stepped up from the club's B team.
However things have not gone to plan under Arbeloa, with Real set to end the season without a major trophy for the second year in a row.
Barcelona can win La Liga if they emerge victorious in Sunday's El Clasico fixture at the Camp Nou and it has been a chaotic period at Real, full of fights, dressing room unrest and a lack of belief in the manager - who has been given the brutal nickname of 'cone' by some of the group.

Real are in complete turmoil at present and a fresh report from The Athletic claims that they want Mourinho to save them by coming back for a second stint.
Mourinho, who won three trophies in his first spell between 2010 and 2013, is the preferred candidate in the eyes of club president Florentino Perez - who is driving the search for a new manager.

The appointment of Alonso was primarily overseen by chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez, with Perez giving the green light.
The 79-year-old sees Mourinho as the man who can turn things around in the Spanish capital and talks are ongoing with his representative Jorge Mendes.
He is happy at Benfica, whom he joined in September after being dismissed by Fenerbahce. However, he would be open to joining Real, who would need to pay a fee of £2.6 million to release him from his contract.
He can leave within 10 days of the season if the clause is met.
Mourinho's 10 major demands to return to Real
Mourinho knows better than most when it comes to the way in which Real operate and a report from Esdario states that he has been a list of demands which must be met for him to head back to the Bernabeu.
Perez is said to have held a video conference with Mourinho, with Mendes also on the line.
During the conversation, Mourinho laid out his conditions - which included having a minimum of two years for his contract as well as full control of the squad and dressing room.
He will not accept any interference from the squad in regards to his selection and will not budge from the stance as he was "absolutely uncompromising".
Mourinho wants the bring his same coaching staff but does not object to Arbeloa staying on - though fitness coach Antonio Pintus would have to move on.
He wants to address issues in the medical department with a direct line to this area following an alarming amount of injuries for Los Blancos.
The 63-year-old wishes to "limit himself to speaking to the press as the manager" and wants someone else to be the main spokesperson.
Seven players are poised to leave Real as Mourinho does not see them as part of his plans and he also only wants to speak with Perez instead of any other employees.
It was a source of frustration during his first spell and he intends on Perez being his main port of call.
Real are one of the biggest clubs in the world but if he becomes manager, it's claimed that Mourinho does not want a big pre-season tour and instead is campaigning for a few friendly fixtures to protect the players mentally and physically.
The final demand is simply that all of the requests are all part of a package and even if one is not agreed to, the deal is off.
