Jose Mourinho's reaction to Rodri's Real Madrid snub revealed as new transfer plan emerges

Jose Mourinho reportedly 'couldn't believe' it when he was told that Rodri would not be signing for Real Madrid, it has been reported.

The Manchester City and Spain midfielder had been expected to move to the Bernabeu for much of the summer transfer window.

But on Thursday, interest emerged from Barcelona, and Rodri has given the green light to join them instead.

It was reported that the 30-year-old made personal contact with members of Real's management to inform them of his decision, and that Real were 'not upset' over his decision as they were not fully convinced that he wanted to sign for them in the first instance.

Barca must now agree a fee with City to sign Rodri, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

More details have emerged, meanwhile, surrounding how Real's key figures reacted behind-the-scenes to Rodri's decision to snub them.

Spanish outlet SPORT claim that Mourinho had 'already assumed that Rodri would be the final piece of the club's summer signings', having 'continued to insist' that Los Blancos sign both a defensive midfielder and a centre-back.

He is said to have told Eduardo Camavinga that he could leave the club in preparation for a new midfielder to come in.

Real players themselves are said to have 'expected' Rodri to sign for the club and were therefore left surprised at his apparent U-turn.

"[Mourinho] will have to make do with the defensive setup of [Aurelien] Tchouameni, Camavinga and [Federico] Valverde, and repurpose Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva into a double pivot," the report adds, claiming that Real are not planning to sign an alternative midfielder. "This scenario has repeated itself for the third consecutive year, and in the previous two, it yielded dismal results."

It is said that Mourinho reacted with 'immense anger' in 'more than one conversation' with Real Madrid executives, during which he was told that a new midfielder would not be targeted.

What will Real Madrid do now?

According to fellow Spanish outlet MARCA, Real will do no more business in the midfield area of the pitch this summer and will keep all of their existing midfielders at the club.

That means that Camavinga, who has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu for the past three summer transfer windows, will be staying put unless Real receive an extraordinary offer.

Rodri's decision will also act as a significant blow to Manchester United, who had held hopes that they could sign Aurelien Tchouameni from the Spanish giants if they could find a replacement.

Michael Carrick's side must now look elsewhere to add to their midfield this summer ahead of a season of Champions League football.
