We asked England fans what they're telling the people back home as they delay their return.
England are through, and for the lucky fans who made the trip Stateside, the thought of coming home is becoming less appealing by the day.
Whether it's chasing the dream of seeing the Three Lions go all the way, or simply refusing to tempt fate by leaving early, plenty of supporters are already wondering how they're going to explain extending their stay to everyone from their bosses and partners to their family and friends.
At least they don’t have to worry about their phone bill, though, as the lovely people at O2 are crediting back roaming charges in the USA until 20 July for pay monthly customers, with its 'Roam 'til it comes home' (get it?) initiative giving customers another reason not to rush for the airport if England's World Cup adventure continues.
And that got us thinking (yes, we do that sometimes) - what excuses are these fans using to justify staying in America even longer? We asked them, and their responses most certainly didn't disappoint.
Here’s what they had to say:
"I've told my boss my return flight keeps getting delayed. I just forgot to mention I'm the one delaying it."
A bold strategy - especially when your annual leave officially ended three days ago.
"I've told my family I'll be back for Sunday lunch. I just didn't say which Sunday."
Technically not a lie. Whether your mum agrees is another matter.
"I can’t possibly leave now, I'm obviously the team’s lucky charm."
England haven't lost since they got there, so leaving now would clearly be irresponsible.
"I've said I need a few extra days to 'experience the culture'."
And by "culture", they mean finding the best sports bar in town for England's next match.
"I've convinced everyone my suitcase has gone missing."
Strange how it only went missing after England made it through to the next round...
"I've told my girlfriend anniversaries are all about making memories, and this definitely counts."
It's certainly memorable. Whether for the right reasons - and for who exactly - is another question entirely.
"If England aren't coming home yet, neither am I."
Short. Simple. Impossible to argue with.
Whether you're genuinely extending your trip or just daydreaming about it, O2 has clearly read the room. Through its 'Roam 'til it comes home' initiative, it is crediting back roaming charges in the USA until 20 July for pay monthly customers, giving fans one more reason to soak up the tournament for a little longer.
And don’t worry mum – football, ergo us, will be home soon.
Ts & Cs:
UK customers only. PAYM Classic Plans. O2 will credit the cost of eligible Bolt Ons purchased and standard roaming charges incurred in the USA between 6 July and 20 July 2026 (PT) to your O2 account before your payment date. Fair Use applies. See Terms.
