Premier League fans make feelings towards Anthony Gordon known as he explains why Barcelona fans rate him so highly

Premier League fans have had their say on Anthony Gordon's comments about how he was viewed by supporters in England.

In one of the most surprising moves of the summer transfer window, England international Gordon left Newcastle United to join Catalan giants Barcelona in a deal worth £69.3million including add-ons.

Since then, the winger has enjoyed somewhat of a career resurgence, becoming a beloved player amongst Barcelona fans, and Gordon has an explanation as to why fans in Spain rate him more than English supporters.

Anthony Gordon explains what English fans didn't 'respect' about his style

Since his arrival Gordon has made seven appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, getting off to a fantastic start with four assists in his first four games.

Although he is yet to score his first goal for Barcelona as his form has dropped in his more recent appearances, Gordon continues to be selected by Hansi Flick, with fans still more than happy with how he's started the season.

And, according to the man himseld, that's because Barcelona fans have started to notice that there's a lot more to his game than what English fans noticed during his time with both Everton and Newcastle United.

"I think I've become a different player in a lot of people's eyes," Gordon told ITV while on international duty with the Three Lions for their Nations League fixtures this week.

"I always felt in England, people respected me because I was fast and I pressed but they never actually respected the quality and IQ that I play with.

"Only the players I play with ever seem to notice that. I think now I'm at Barcelona and I play a different style, those qualities are highlighted much more and people are actually starting to take notice that I'm not just quick.

"In England, it was never really respected because people just see me as really quick and really aggressive. In Spain, they really appreciate my IQ and quality because at Barça, if you're not technical, if you're not smart, you're going to stand out like a sore thumb."

Gordon made 152 appearances for Newcastle United during his three year spell at the club, with 78 appearances during his just over five years as a senior player at Everton before that.

Premier League fans react to Anthony Gordon's 'respect' claim

Unsurprisingly, it didn't take long for English fans to respond to Gordon's claims, with many of them slamming the Three Lions star, claiming he is overrating his own ability.

Reacting to interview, one fan wrote on X: "What footballing IQ? He's a kick and run winger who can't do anything without acres of space

Another agreed, adding: "Anthony - you’re a decent player. We all know that. But you’re a player who is fast and direct. Thats your whole game. Not knocking it, it’s effective, but you’re hardly the Kirkdale Pirlo of football IQ wise."

While a Newcastle United fan pointed asked: "Is he aware that he went over a year without an open play league goal?"

That being said, not all English fans reacted poorly to his comments, with some admitting that he is still underrated by fans in the Premier League.

One Newcastle fan admitted: "See people taking the p***, but I like him and I like his confidence. He had a poor season for us last year (as they all did), but he’s a top-level player and far more interesting to listen to than 99% of footballers these days."

With another adding: "Talk your s***! Obviously he’s going to keep improving but people acting like he’s a completely different player now than he was for us for the last few years are wrong, his consistency was the main issue."

While one claimed: "Not this deep, Anthony. People didn’t really rate you in England because you played for NUFC. Not one of the big boys. Now, you play for Barca casual fans who deem themselves as experts automatically see you as world class.

"It’s that simple."

Despite the backlash, Gordon has impressed while on international duty with England so far, starting both the 3-2 loss to Spain and the meeting with Czechia.
