Anthony Gordon ruthlessly singles out England teammate for Spain collapse live on-air

Anthony Gordon has indirectly blamed one of his England teammates for the 3-2 defeat against Spain.

In their opening Nations League match, the Three Lions came dangerously close to toppling the world champions at Wembley Stadium when Gordon and Harry Kane's quick-fire goals cancelled out Lamine Yamal's second-minute strike.

A superb performance after going behind should have seen Thomas Tuchel's side open up a two-goal lead. But Kane cannoned a 54th-minute penalty off the crossbar after Jude Bellingham was hacked down in the box, and this ultimately cost the hosts.

Substitute Alex Baena curled a beautiful strike into the right corner minutes after Kane missed from 12 yards before turning provider when he sliced through England's defence with an inch-perfect pass into Mikel Oyarzabal, who delicately lobbed James Trafford.

In the eyes of Gordon, who was exceptional down the left flank against Spain, the Three Lions would have won that game if his teammate hadn't squandered a huge chance from the penalty spot.

Speaking live on ITV after the match, the Barcelona forward said: "As I said during my press conference two days ago, I don't think there's a real gap. I feel like we're right there. We could very well have won this match. As I said, if the penalty had been converted, I think we would have kept up the momentum and taken the win.

"It's always easy to say in hindsight, but during the match, I was satisfied and convinced that we would have won if we'd scored that penalty.

"So I don't think there's a gap. I also said this week: if we'd faced them in the final, I'd have backed our chances. Confidence doesn't always guarantee victory, but once again, I think we've shown tonight that we're a top-class team."

The 25-year-old was a constant thorn in Marc Pubill's side, utilising his devastating pace in transition and taking his goal superbly after playing a sublime one-two with Bellingham on the halfway line.

An incredible performance against the best team on the planet has only seen him continue the form he's displayed at Barcelona, where he's assisted five times in his opening LaLiga matches.

Kane's penalty miss was a deciding factor in why England didn't go on to win the game, but it wasn't the only reason they left Wembley Stadium empty-handed.

The Three Lions made numerous errors when attempting to play out from the back. Marc Guehi was at fault for Yamal's first goal, as he had his pockets picked by the 19-year-old.

Meanwhile, Nico O'Reilly was also guilty of giving away possession too easily and costing his side when he passed the ball straight to Baena before he curled one into the corner.

When discussing the outcome of the match, Tuchel said Kane's penalty miss was the "decisive" moment, but also the "individual mistakes" from his players that prevented a historic victory over Spain.

“(Kane) couldn’t unfortunately convert the penalty, and that may have been the decisive moment because Spain would have, maybe for the first time, believed that their long run of unbeaten games ends here," the German said.

“Then another big mistake for the 2-2, and the third goal was the only goal they really scored. The other ones, too many individual mistakes on that level. It is what it is. We have to keep going, learn from it, and take the points back from Czech Republic.”

England are next in action against Czech Republic on Tuesday evening (September 29).
