England's next debutant: The uncapped stars pushing to be Thomas Tuchel's next surprise call-up
With his latest squad selection, Thomas Tuchel has shown a willingness to bring inexperienced players into his England side - a promising sign for those pushing to receive their maiden call-up.
Rio Ngumoha, for example, was invited to train with the senior side ahead of this summer's World Cup and, after catching the eye in camp, he was handed his England debut against New Zealand.
The 18-year-old, who has featured for Liverpool on five occasions this season, has since retained his place in Tuchel's first post-World Cup squad alongside Alex Scott, another member of that pre-tournament training group.

So, who could be next? We've taken a look at the uncapped players who missed out on upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia, but are pushing for a place in Tuchel's squad.
The ones that are knocking on Thomas Tuchel's door
Josh King
Alongside Scott, Ngumoha and Ethan Nwaneri, the in-form Josh King was one of four players to be invited to train with England during their pre-World Cup camp in Florida.
Scott and Ngumoha received a call-up for this month's Nations League games, but the Fulham striker will need to be patient after missing out on the latest squad.
If Tuchel's latest comments are anything to go by, though, King looks to be on the verge of receiving a much-deserved first senior call-up.
Speaking in a recent press conference, Tuchel said the forward was "very close' and is on his radar. "Josh has had a fantastic start to the season with Fulham. It was very close," he added.
The standout name to watch ahead of the next England squad, for sure.
Jayden Bogle
Bogle's performances at club level have definitely forced him into the conversation. After establishing himself in the top flight last term, the attacking full-back has started all five league games for Leeds United this season.
The 26-year-old, who has played a key role in Leeds’ run of five defeats in their past 30 league games, was recently named Leeds' Player of the Match in their 4-1 win over Newcastle.
Many onlookers, including Leeds head coach Daniel Farke, thought Bogle should have been rewarded with a debut call-up for the upcoming international break. In total, he has been capped four times by England at under-20 level.
Jack Hinshelwood
Much like the soon-to-be-mentioned Lewis Miley, one of Jack Hinshelwood's biggest strengths is his versatility.
The 21-year-old can operate in midfield and at full-back, while a brace against Aston Villa on the opening weekend of this season was a reminder of his ability going forward.
Hinshelwood was named in Tuchel's provisional 55-man England squad list for the World Cup, so the midfielder is clearly on Tuchel's radar. Watch this space if he continues to perform for Brighton.
The ones that are a run of form away from getting a call-up
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
A regular for Everton since his move from Chelsea, the dependable Dewsbury-Hall recently revealed that he made Tuchel's provisional 55-man England squad list for the World Cup.
“I know I’m the closest I have ever been now," he told The Guardian when speaking about a possible England call-up. "It’s a good feeling because you think: ‘OK, I am close,’ but you know you have to keep pushing it to the last minute."
Last season, Dewsbury-Hall registered eight goals and four assists in 31 Premier League appearances. This term, he has started every league game and continues to impress in the middle of Everton's midfield.
Lewis Miley
The versatile and resilient Miley has started every league game for Newcastle United so far this season, impressing for Matthias Jaissle's side.
Naturally a central midfielder, the 20-year-old's ability to fill in at right-back is likely to appeal to Tuchel, who has struggled to find a player who can occupy that position on a regular basis.
Earlier this year, former Newcastle player Bruno Guimaraes praised Miley and backed him to earn a World Cup call-up. Of course, that didn't materialise, but his comments still ring true.
"When I was 19, I wasn't even playing in the first team on a regular basis, while Lewis is putting in displays like that week after week in the Premier League," said Guimaraes. "He can play in every position and put in top class performances."
Jobe Bellingham
Earlier this month, it was reported that members of Tuchel’s staff are 'impressed' by Jobe Bellingham, with the midfielder being 'firmly on the radar' ahead of this month's international fixtures.
The report from Team Talk goes on to suggest that his development at Borussia Dortmund has been closely monitored by England, with his versatility being lauded by those behind the scenes.
This season, Bellingham has featured in every league game for Dortmund. If he continues to impress, it appears a debut call-up could well be on the horizon for Jude Bellingham's younger brother.
Marcus Tavernier
Tavernier has been one of Bournemouth's standout performers of late.
After an impressive season across 2025-26, the versatile forward has only enhanced his chances of an England call-up in recent weeks, after finding the net against Manchester City, Newcastle and Brentford.
Tavernier's performances have caught the eye of Tuchel and his England staff, according to Team Talk. He missed out this time around but if he continues to impress in front of goal, a call-up may not be too far away.
The ones that are destined to play for England one day but aren't quite there yet
Max Dowman
This one seems inevitable. Still only 16, the Arsenal teenager is the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history and the youngest player to feature in the Champions League.
Tuchel even kept the door open for a potential World Cup call-up last season, although those behind the scenes at England are clearly taking a patient, more considered approach to his development.
A report from The Sun claims Tuchel is considering giving Dowman the chance to train with the senior side ahead of upcoming games. It feels like a matter of when, rather than if. Those two goals against Ipswich this month will have certainly strengthened his case.
Will Lankshear
Some will see this as a rogue shout, but Lankshear has made an outstanding start to his Middlesbrough career following his summer move from Tottenham, scoring six goals in eight Championship games.
In fact, that early-season form has landed Lankshear a first call-up to Lee Carsley's England under-21 squad.
Earlier this month, talkSPORT's Adrian Durham backed the 21-year-old to lead the line for England at Euro 2028 as he compared aspects of his game to Harry Kane.
"I think had he gone to a lower Premier League side instead of Middlesbrough, he might have been in this squad," said Durham, who added: "I think he is going to be the real deal."
