Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has revealed the unusual tradition he has when his team win a big game.

McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchased the Red Dragons in February 2021 and have invested massively into the club and the local community.

Wrexham won the National League with a huge points tally of 111 last season, securing automatic promotion back to League Two for the first time in 2008.

The Red Dragons are now fourth in League Two on 33 points and chasing a second successive automatic promotion under Phil Parkinson.

McElhenney had to be told what the offside rule was by David Beckham not too long into his tenure but quickly immersed himself into the beautiful game.

In fact, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star loves it so much that whenever he is near pitchside at the SToK Cae Ras, he ends up taking some of the grass a memento.

He would then stick them in bags and label them before placing in a draw in his office.

But McElhenney's wife Kaitlin Olson decided to make better use of the turf by turning it into a birthday present.

"I’m staring right now, in my office, at a thing my wife made for me for my birthday," McElhenney told The Athletic.

"When I get down on the pitch, I have a tendency to take some of the grass and put it in my pocket, so I have a keep-sake of the event.

"I’d keep them in these little plastic bags and put a piece of paper inside with the occasion [written on each]. She stole them from the drawer I keep them in and took them to a [picture] framer.

"Now they are behind this air-sealed glass. They put some kind of chemical in the grass to keep [preserve] it, and then there is a little plaque underneath each one."

Wrexham were beaten 2-0 by Accrington Stanley in their last game and will now look to bounce back with a home game against Morecambe on Saturday.

It might not quite have the makings of a fixture where McElhenney simply has to pick up some of the pitch but Wrexham are certainly in a good position for a play-off spot already at this early start age.

They are eight points off league leaders Stockport, who look good value to lift the title.
