Ange Postecoglou has named the four players he wanted to sign at Tottenham Hotspur but was blocked from doing so.

Postecoglou, 60, was appointed Spurs boss back in the summer of 2023, becoming the first Australian and the first Greek to manage in the Premier League.

The Australian led Spurs to a fifth-place finish during his first season in charge, securing a place in the UEFA Europa League.

In Postecoglou's second season, Spurs' form in the Premier League took a drastic drop as they ended up finishing in 17th place.

However, Spurs did win the Europa League, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final and securing a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite clinching European glory, Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs in June 2025 and was replaced by Thomas Frank, who was sacked this week.

Speaking recently on the Stick to Football Podcast, Postecoglou revealed that he wanted to sign four players after his first season in order to move Spurs further up the table, but the club went in a different direction.

He said: "What are they trying to build? They've built an unbelievable stadium and unbelievable training facilities, but when you look at the expenditure, they're not a big club.

"I saw that, because when we were trying to sign players, we weren't in the market for those players. At the end of my first year when we finished fifth, how do you go from fifth to really challenging? We had to sign Premier League-ready players. Finishing fifth that year didn't get us Champions League, so we didn't have the money."

Postecoglou continued: "We got Dom Solanke, who I was really keen on, and three teenagers. I was looking at Pedro Neto, [Bryan] Mbeumo, [Antoine] Semenyo, Marc Guehi - because if we're going to go from fifth to challenging, that's what the other clubs would do in that moment.

"Those three teenagers are outstanding young players, and will be brilliant players for Tottenham. But they're not going to get you from fifth to fourth and third. What was coming out from the club, was that we're a club that can compete on all fronts."

After leaving Spurs, Postecoglou was appointed Nottingham Forest boss in September 2025, but was sacked just 39 days later.
