Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly expected to become the boss of a huge European club ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Despite arriving at Old Trafford with a glowing reputation, having led Sporting CP to two Portuguese league titles during his time in Lisbon, Amorim’s 14-month period in charge of United did not go as he would’ve liked.
The 41-year-old guided United to 25 wins, 15 draws and 23 defeats across his 63 games in charge before being sacked by the club on January 6, before Michael Carrick succeeded the Portuguese in the role.
Since then, the former United midfielder has led the Red Devils to four successive victories – against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Spurs – which has put the Old Trafford club in a strong position in their pursuit of securing a Champions League qualification spot.

And given United’s upturn in form, very few supporters have concerned themselves with Amorim since he departed.

However, the 41-year-old will likely still harbour ambitions of a successful career in management despite ultimately failing in the Premier League.
Amorim won three – two with Sporting and one with Braga - Taca da Liga crowns during his time in Portugal, as well as two Primeira Liga crowns with Verde e Brancos.
But during his playing career, which spanned 13 years, he made 154 appearances for Sporting’s city rivals Benfica, and he may also soon take charge of As Aguias.
As reported by ESPN, Benfica expect current head coach Jose Mourinho to depart in the summer before taking over as Portugal head coach when Roberto Martinez’s contract expires following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in July.
Then, if Mourinho does become national team boss, Amorim is expected to succeed the ‘Special One’ at Estadio da Luz.
ESPN claims that Amorim has “significant support” among the club’s decision makers while he retains a glowing reputation in his native country.

Speaking to A Bola in November, former Benfica forward Nuno Gomes explained how he expects Amorim to one day become head coach of the club, but suggested this has not happened yet, as Amorim turned down the offer to coach the reserve team.
Amorim has previously revealed that he grew up supporting Benfica despite later becoming Sporting boss.
Benfica currently sit third in the Portuguese top-flight and trail leaders Porto by seven points. Amorim’s former club, Sporting, are second, three points above Mourinho’s side.
