Incredible Jose Mourinho Conspiracy Theory Drops After Benfica's Last-Gasp Win

Ally McCoist was convinced.

Ally McCoist has been convinced by a Jose Mourinho theory following Benfica's incredible 4-2 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Benfica booked their spot in the knockout phase of this season's Champions League in incredible fashion on Wednesday night.

With results meaning Mourinho's side needed to win by two clear goals, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a 98th-minute header against Real Madrid to send the hosts to a play-off.

Rather fittingly, Benfica will play Real Madrid once again in the play-off after defeat knocked Alvaro Arbeloa's side out of the top eight with the full draw now confirmed.

Trubin's header wasn't just the last action of the match, but the last action across all of the Champions League league phase, with the game being the last of the 18 to finish.

Speaking at full-time on TNT's goal show, McCoist theorised that Mourinho's game being the last to finish might not have been a coincidence.

"Mourinho, right? Excellent coach, been there, done it, turned it over," The Scott began.

"Do you think— It was the last game to finish. Do you think he has deliberately kicked off the second half late so that he knows what's happened elsewhere? Because I'll tell you right now, I would not put that past him."

TNT presenter Matt Smith responded to McCoist: "I know what you're saying, I know what you're saying. He certainly knew what he was doing once they found out on the bench that either another goal, because they've been wasting time, haven't they."

Mourinho didn't admit to any dark arts when he was quizzed at full-time, and instead focussed on the immense scenes created by Trubin's last gasp header.

“Our goalkeeper Trubin, who is 2m tall, went into the box and scored a fantastic goal, a historic goal," he said following the final whistle.

He added: "It felt like the stadium was going to collapse. Incredible."
