An inflation-adjusted list of the most expensive Premier League transfers has revealed that Alan Shearer's record-breaking £15 million move to Newcastle United would now be worth £223.3 million.
The seismic shift in football's landscape at the turn of the 21st century transformed the game into a multi-billion-dollar industry, with billionaire owners, television deals and eye-watering player salaries playing its part.
A quick look at the progression of the British transfer fee record puts it all into perspective.
Just a decade after the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer made a £15 million switch to Newcastle in 1996, Andriy Shevchenko joined Chelsea from AC Milan for more than double that amount.

And ten years after Shevchenko's move, Paul Pogba broke the British transfer record when he re-joined Manchester United for a reported £89 million. The current holder? Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool last summer in a deal worth £125 million.
It begs the question. What would a list of the most expensive signings in Premier League history look like if inflation was brought into the equation?

This week, football finance expert Kieran Maguire answered that question.
"Who would be the most expensive player in Premier League history adjusting for football inflation (increase in total revenue for the PL per season)? It has to be the greatest goalscorer...the one and only Alan Shearer" he wrote on X.
Maguire posted a comprehensive list of the inflated fees, with Shearer featuring twice alongside Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastian Veron, Stan Collymore and Fernando Torres, who make up the top five.
Dennis Bergkamp's £7.5 million move from Inter Milan to Arsenal in the summer of 1995 worth now be worth £147 million, while Pogba's previously mentioned move to Manchester United from Juventus has been bumped to £133.4 million.

As expected, Manchester United players feature heavily throughout, with Juan Sebastian Veron, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Pogba, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole all featuring in the top 10.
Roy Keane's move from Nottingham Forest to United, meanwhile, was confirmed at £3.75 million in 1993 but if you take inflation into account, the deal would now cost £91.8 million, which would be 49th in the list.
Three places below Keane is former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, who joined the Gunners from Real Madrid in 2013 for £42.5 million. His adjusted fee in 2026 is £89.2 million.
