Premier League club exploring shock Marcus Rashford transfer days before deadline

A shock Premier League club are reportedly considering an unlikely move for Marcus Rashford ahead of the September 1 deadline.

Rashford made his first competitive appearance for Manchester United since December 2024 when he was introduced as a substitute during the side’s 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City on Saturday (August 22).

The 28-year-old, who is under contract at United until 2028, had been heavily linked with a move away from his boyhood club for some time, having been loaned to Aston Villa and Barcelona over the past two seasons.

Despite performing well for Barca, with his contributions helping the Catalans win the La Liga title last term, the Spanish side decided against paying £26million to make the Englishman’s switch permanent.

As a result, Rashford was forced to return to United and has since been reintegrated into Michael Carrick’s squad.

It was previously reported that the forward was attracting interest from multiple clubs across Europe, including in Turkey, Germany and Italy, as well as the Premier League.

Premier League club considering Marcus Rashford move

Although Carrick is reportedly keen to retain Rashford’s services, The Independent has reported that Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are now considering a late move for the forward before the September 1 transfer deadline.

The outlet suggests a potential move may depend on whether Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson joins Atletico Madrid or Aston Villa, which may then have a knock-on effect on other transfers.

If Rashford were to join Chelsea, he would likely become the club’s highest earner with the England international currently on £325,000 per week.

Wesley Fofana and Reece James are the Blues' current highest earners on £200,000 per week.

New Chelsea boss Alonso got his tenure off to a winning start on Monday (August 24), with the Blues coming away with a 3-2 win over west London rivals Fulham. Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and new signing Morgan Rogers got on the scoresheet.

Chelsea have already recruited heavily this summer, spending £350million on Valentin Barco, Pep Chavarria, Jordan Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Rogers, Destan Satpayev and Geovany Quenda.

Multiple players have already departed, with Trevoh Chalobah joining Serie A side Como, Marc Cucurella signing for Real Madrid and Tyrique George moving to fellow Premier League side Everton after a loan spell at the Toffees last term.

Richard Olise, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Frankie Runham, Sam Rak-Sakyi, Andrey Santos, Jimi Tauriainen and Joseph Wheeler-Henry have also left the club.

Enzo Fernandez continues to be linked with an exit, with a move to Manchester City looking most likely, while the Blues retain an interest in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, having already seen three bids worth between £62million and £68million rejected this summer.
