The future of one of Manchester United's young star players has taken a sudden turn as a January transfer has been agreed.

It's now been a week since the transfer window reopened at the turn of the new year, and yet most Premier League clubs have stayed relatively quiet.

So far, Crystal Palace have secured a £35million club record signing of Brennan Johnson while Bournemouth's Antonine Semenyo is expected to join Manchester City in the coming days.

Following a busy summer window that saw them spend a massive £236m to rejuvenate their squad, it is widely expected that Manchester United will instead focus on outgoings in January.

However, their plans to part ways with one player may have been ruined due to the transfer plans of another top club.

Joshua Zirkzee joined United from Bologna in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £34m, penning a five year contract, but has failed to impress or secure a regular spot in the team.

Because of this, it has been widely speculated that the Dutchman could be one of the player that United would look to move on in January, with several clubs reportedly interested.

Among the clubs said to be interested in signing the striker was Serie A side AS Roma, with sporting director Ricky Massara acknowledging their interest in Zirkzee while speaking to Sky Sports.

"He is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us," Massara claimed.

But it now appears that United's hopes of agreeing a deal with Roma to either sell Zirkzee or send him there on loan could now be futile as a report from transfer Fabrizio Romano claiming that the Serie A side have agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid for Giacomo Raspadori.

The report claims that Raspadori is expected to join Roma as part of a loan move for a €1.5m fee. but Roma will also have the option to make the move permanent for a package around €20/23m (£17.3/19.9m).

As it stands, the deal is yet to be completed, with Roma now holding talks with the Italian striker and his team to agree personal terms.

However, should the move go ahead, it would almost certainly rule out the possibility of Zirkzee going to Roma anytime soon, forcing United to consider options for the 24-year-old's future.
